Can we just be real here for a minute? I have put off writing this post for nearly two weeks now. I have put it on my todo list everyday and then when the time comes to sit down and write, I get crazy anxious and end up working on something else. Yet, I never totally abandon my idea to write about motherhood, so I must have something to say. Truth is, I get anxious about writing this post because I feel like no one wants to hear about motherhood from the world's most "okayest" mom. On any given day, I feel like other are judging the parenting choices I make. Today I heard, "I don't really get the whole working mom thing, I mean why even have kids in the first place?" As a mom with two very fulfilling (yet very busy) careers who is also doing my Master's degree, this isn't the first time I have heard this. Sometimes, well-meaning people will say, "I don't know how you do it? My kids really needed me at home when they were young". Well, my kids need to eat, so I work! Truth be told, even if I was in a position to stay home, I would still work. I want to model hard work, independence, and financial responsibility to my children. I also want them to have amazing experience through travel and, with three kids, airfare is not cheap! So, I work. Did I mention that I also let my kids walk to school, pack their own lunches, clean their rooms and even scrub toilets on occasion. I really am an awful mom! I make all of these choices for my kids because I believe them to be important. That doesn't mean I think the mom who drives her kids to school and writes little inspirational messages in her kids bento box lunchkits are doing it wrong. Heck no! Good on you for making time to do those things! Just because something doesn't work for me, doesn't mean its wrong for you. This is what I want all moms to know today: You are doing a great job! Really. Stop overthinking your parenting and just do what feels right and makes you and your kiddos happy. And while I am on this preachy bandwagon, can I ask one more thing of all the mommas? Can you please stop avoiding pictures because you are self-conscious about how you look. Yes, things change when we become moms. Its easy to feel like you've been rocking a messy bun for months and that no one will want to see pictures of you and your baby when you are covered in spit-up. How many pictures can you think of that you have with you and your own mother? Did you wish you had more?
So, this May, I encourage you to take at least 5 pictures with your kids. Heck, I will even help you get there by taking them for you as a mini session. Book a session, take an extra few minutes for yourself and come spend some time playing with your kids while I capture it on camera. In twenty years, both you and your kids will be so thankful that you did! The pictures below are of me and my oldest girl. Now, I just need to make time to take some with my two boys!
